Our Pastor’s Message
A Prayer to the Holy Spirit

By Father Jim

As Pentecost approaches, we are mindful of the glorious moment when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and blessed them with the necessary grace, strength, and courage to preach the Good News of Christ throughout the world. More specifically, the Holy Spirit offered them seven gifts: knowledge, wisdom, fortitude, reverence, understanding, right judgment, and awe at God’s power and majesty.

Here and now, the beautiful burden of sharing the Gospel falls to us, each one of us, in our homes, hometowns, parishes, and workplaces. It falls to us, each one of us, to open our hearts and minds, embrace the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and give witness to God’s love and mercy to the four corners of the world, even if our own personal world barely extends beyond the borders of Gloucester and Rockport.

As we gather this week for our annual celebration of the Crowning Feast of the Holy Spirit, we renew our shared vocation to living the Gospel, sharing God’s love, and rebuilding the Church. And each day, we pledge to offer this compelling prayer during this special week in the life of our beloved faith community:

Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
enlighten our minds
to perceive the mysteries of the universe
in relation to eternity.
Spirit of right judgment and courage,
guide us and make us firm
in our baptismal decision
to follow the Lord’s way of love.
Spirit of knowledge and reverence,
help us to see the lasting value
of justice and mercy
in our everyday dealings with one another.
May we respect life
as we work to solve problems
of nation and family, ecology and economy.
Spirit of God,
spark our faith, hope, and love
into new action each and every day.
Fill our lives with wonder and awe
at your presence which penetrates all creation.
Amen. Amen.

Regardless of where you worship on the weekend, please remember that all friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners of the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport are welcome to join us for Crowning Week! May the Holy Spirit inspire us with a joyful zeal for prayer, fellowship, and service! And may we cry out with one voice: Come, Holy Spirit! Come! Enkindle in us the fire of your love! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Words of Wisdom from Pope Francis

The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church.
The Spirit gives life, brings forth different charisms
that enrich the people of God, and above all,
creates unity among believers.
From the many, the Holy Spirit makes us
the one Body of Christ.
The Church’s whole life and mission depend
on the Holy Spirit who fulfills all things.

A Rosary for Peace
Let’s Pray Together!

In Communion with Pope Leo XIV

In January 2003, just a few weeks before the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, an ailing Pope John Paul II (1920-2005) met with international diplomats in Rome. The Holy Father did not mince words about the looming prospect of hostilities between nations. In a frail voice, he cried out: “No to war! War is not always inevitable, but it is always a defeat for humanity!”

At the same time, the pope and saint reminded his audience that peace is always within reach. He said: “It is possible to change the course of events, once goodwill, trust in others, fidelity to commitments, and cooperation between responsible partners are allowed to prevail.”

In this spirit and in spiritual communion with those who long for peace around the world, all friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners of the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport are invited to join Father Jim and Brother Patrick in offering A Rosary for Peace Featuring Prayers by Pope Francis at the following days and times:

  • A Rosary for Peace
    Saturday, May 16th at 2:30pm
    With Eucharistic Adoration
    Saint Ann Church
  • A Rosary for Peace
    Saturday, May 30th at 2:30pm

Safe & Easy Electronic Giving

Let us insist on raising funds for peace and love. — Mother Teresa

Electronic giving has become an essential part of parish support in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport; and it is available in both Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish. It is safe and easy to make online donations to your home parish using a credit card, debit card, or electronic check.

Donations can be made on a weekly, monthly, or one-time only basis; and it takes just a few minutes to set up a secure personal account. In addition to the weekly offering, you can also give electronically to our church restoration funds which help us plan for the repair and maintenance of our four beloved and historic churches.

Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish always need your generous support! Please prayerfully considering enrolling in our electronic giving program! For more information about creating a new account or assistance with an existing account, please contact Father Jim at frjim@ccgronline.com. Peace, blessings, and sincere thanks to all!
