This Week’s Message
Make Room for God
By Paige Byrne Shortal
In my part of the world, May is not a time to think about personal self-improvement and other interior matters. We do that in January, during Lent, maybe in September, but not in May. In rural Missouri, May is when the weather is reliably warm. It is time to raise the storm windows and let in the fresh air. It is time for spring cleaning the house, for throwing out the accumulation of winter.
It is astounding what we hold on to. The shirt we never wear but might someday. The books we never read but might someday. The platters, plastic storage containers, pots with no lids, lids with no pots, that old brown purse, the shoes that never fit, unused tools, half-completed projects, that cluttery stuff! It’s too much! Let’s go yard-sale-ing instead. Sale signs are popping up everywhere along with the vio- lets. There might be some good deals. But first, what about the cost of too much stuff?
In our house, we try to control too much stuff by adhering to the wisdom of designer William Morris, who said: “Have nothing in your homes that you do not know to be useful and believe to be beautiful.” My husband is better at it than I am. He has a rule for himself. When something comes in, something must go out. Give him a shirt, he gives a shirt away. He has one small closet, one bureau drawer. I cheat. I put clothes in a cedar chest so I can decide later what to do with them.
Here is a sobering fact. The self-storage industry claims more than $39 billion in annual revenues and construction spending on self-storage has increased by 584% from January 2015 to January 2020. Self-storage is an apt name. For we give a little bit of ourselves to each thing we own — our time and energy to buy it, clean it, walk around it, store it, wonder what to do with it. And someday, someone we love will inherit all this stuff. Lucky them.
A home can hold only a few beautiful and useful things. Too much and they cease to be beautiful or useful. The same is true for our hearts and minds. We can only hold so much. If our homes are clut- tered, chances are that our hearts and minds will be cluttered, too.
In the Easter stories, we hear about the disciples hiding in the upper room or walking on the road to Emmaus or meeting Jesus on the shore. Keeping a low profile, they would have traveled light, and they are feeling empty inside after the death of their friend and teacher. Each time Jesus appeared to them, they did not recognize him. Who would? He was dead! But they had room for him and his words. Their eyes were opened, their hearts burned within them, and his words changed their lives.
Do we have room for life-changing words? Do we have time for the Risen Jesus? For Jesus to rise in us, anything that is not of Jesus has to go. Let’s do what comes naturally in May. Let’s spring clean. But while we are cleaning out the closet, let’s let go of whatever is holding us back from being the person we are meant to be. As we jettison the outgrown clothes or unused kitchen items, let’s also surrender the grudges, anxieties, selfishness, envy, pessimism, cynicism, anything and everything about which the Holy Spirit is whispering in our ear: Oh come on, you don’t need that. Let it go. Trust me.

Call to Prayer
Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
Sunday, May 25th
An Ancient Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity
The Father is my hope.
The Son is my refuge.
The Holy Spirit is my protector.
Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity,
now and forever. Amen.
A Prayer for Trinity Sunday
Glory to the Father,
who by his almighty power and love,
created me and made me
in the image and likeness of God.
Glory to the Son,
who by his precious blood delivered me
from darkness, and opened for me
the gates of heaven forever.
Glory to the Holy Spirit,
who has sanctified me
through the Sacrament of Baptism,
and continues to sanctify me
by the daily blessings
given graciously from his bounty.
Glory to the three adorable persons
of the Most Holy Trinity,
both now and forever. Amen.
Glory to the Father,
to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen.
Gospel of Matthew 28:19
Go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Memorial Day
A Holy Mass for Our Fallen Heroes
Monday, May 27th
On Monday, May 27th, we remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to our country and to the causes of freedom, justice, and peace around the world. As a community united in prayer, fellowship, and service, we raise our hearts and voices in prayer for all who have served our nation, for all who have died, and for peace in our sick and suffering world:
A Prayer for Memorial Day
Good and gracious God,
on Memorial Day,
we pray for those men and women
who courageously laid down their lives
for the cause of freedom.
May the example of their sacrifice
inspire in us the selfless love
of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Bless the families of our fallen troops.
Fill their home and hearts
with your peace and strength.
In union with people of good will
from every nation around the world,
embolden us to answer the call
to work for peace and justice,
and to seek an end
to all war, conflict, and violence.
Amen.
All friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners of the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport are invited to join us for the celebration of a Memorial Day Mass on Monday, May 27th at 8:00am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. Before Mass, we will pray the Holy Rosary for peace in our world and for the souls of our fallen heroes and their families. Spread the word! Bring a friend! Please join us! All are welcome!

Saints for All Seasons
Annual Mini-Retreat Series
Thursday, May 30th
Praying with Saint Joan of Arc
Now more than ever, we need to step back from the business and busyness of daily life and focus on our relationships with Jesus and those we are called to love. Unfortunately, few among us are able to leave behind home, work, and family for a real retreat from the responsibilities of the world. For this reason and for the third consecutive year, we are very pleased to announce a special series of mini-retreats called Saints for All Seasons.
Throughout his long priestly ministry, Pope Francis has called people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about and pray with the saints. The Holy Father believes in his heart that the saints bring us closer to Christ, closer to the Church, and closer to each other. He says: “The saints are still here, not far from us; and their images [and relics] in our churches evoke the ‘cloud of witnesses’ that always surrounds us (cf. Hebrews 12:1)…The saints remind us that even in our lives, however weak and marked by sin, holiness can unfold (4-7-21).”
In this spirit of unfolding holiness, all are invited to join us in April, May, and July for a series of two-hour mini-retreats. These times of prayer, reflection, and adoration will focus on the lives of three amazing saints: Saint Zita of Lucca, Saint Joan of Arc, and Saint Veronica. Each mini-retreat will begin with the celebration of Holy Mass in Saint Anthony Chapel. After Mass, Father Jim and Brother Patrick will offer a reflection on the life and veneration of a saint whose life of holiness and love of neighbor has inspired men and women all around the world. There will be time for questions and faith sharing, too.
After each reflection, we will pray in silent adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and in veneration of the holy images of each saint of the day. We will conclude by praying the Holy Rosary and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Here’s our upcoming schedule:

The Assisi Project
The Mother’s Heart
Saturday, June 1st
Praying with Our Lady, Queen of Apostles
For more than one hundred years, the stained glass windows in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church have inspired men and women of faith to reflect on the Blessed Virgin Mary under her various titles and patronages. Under her mantle, generations of good and hardworking people have found comfort, consolation, and the strength to carry on during challenging times.
Throughout this year, Father Jim, Brother Patrick, and the Assisi Project are focusing our prayers and reflections on the Blessed Mother as she is depicted in the windows of our beloved church. We will not focus so much on the art and architecture of the windows, but on the deep devotion and spirituality inspired by each image of Mary.
In this spirit, all are invited to join us for the Mother’s Heart: A Morning of Prayer with Our Lady, Queen of Apostles on Saturday, June 1st beginning with Mass at 8:00am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. After Mass, Father Jim and Brother Patrick will offer a brief reflection on Our Lady, Queen of Apostles. We will also have plenty of time for questions and faith sharing.
Since the 12th century, Mary has been venerated as mother and queen of apostles. This devotion is rooted in the sacred scriptures where we find Mary walking with and offering guidance to those who believe in her Son. As the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport prepares for Saint Peter’s Fiesta (June 26th through June 30th), it seems right and fitting that we reflect on the Blessed Mother’s love for the apostles.
For more information about the Assisi Project and its good work in our parishes, please see Brother Patrick or contact him at brpatrick@assisiproject.com. Save the date! Spread the word! Bring a friend! Please join us! All are invited! All are welcome! Our Lady, Queen of Apostles, pray for us! May the Lord give you peace!
