The Mirror of Eternity
By Brother Patrick
On August 11th, Franciscans throughout the world celebrate the Feast of Saint Clare of Assisi (1194-1253). Saint Clare is venerated as patron of homemakers, television, good weather, eye diseases, and knitters and needle workers. Clare is perhaps best known, however, as the dearest friend and most devoted follower of Saint Francis of Assisi. More than eight centuries ago, she founded the “Poor Ladies of San Damiano” which is now better known as the Poor Clares. Perhaps more than any other Franciscan, Clare most faithfully lived the gospel life of prayer, fellowship, simplicity, and service.
Although Saint Clare lived almost all of her adult life within a cloister, she was a person of great courage and perseverance. When mercenary soldiers attempted to breach the walls of her convent, she confronted them with the Blessed Sacrament and they retreated. When a bishop asked her to compromise her principles and accept gifts of riches and property, Clare declined and said: “I must be absolved from my sins, but not from my obligation to follow the Poor Christ.” And when the pope refused to approve her strict rule of life, she refused to die until the rule was approved. Just two days after it was finally given a papal blessing, she happily and peacefully passed away.
The imagery of a mirror is prominent in the writings and spirituality of Saint Clare. Having dedicated their lives to the Gospel of Christ, Clare saw her small community (soon to spread around the world) as a mirror or reflection of the Lord’s life, death, and resurrection. In this mirror, the Poor Clares could see and examine their own lives, but also the lives of Jesus and his disciples. Over and over again, Saint Clare urges her sisters, her spiritual children, and all of us to look into the mirror of Christ, pray about what we see, and then act on it.
In her Testament, Saint Clare reminds us that all believers are called to be mirrors of the Christ who lived, died, and rose again for the salvation of souls. She writes: “Place your mind before the mirror of eternity! Place your soul in the brilliance of glory! Transform your entire being into the image of God through your prayer!” Once we fall in love with the Lord and unite our lives with his life, we must then share ourselves with the world around us. Clare says: “We become what we love and who we love shapes what we become;” and “We are to become vessels of God’s compassionate love for others.” In this way, our prayers are not confined to a church. Our prayers are not just about us and what we think we need. Rather, our prayers come to life through our good works — loving our neighbor, serving the poor, caring for the sick, and welcoming the stranger.
For nearly two decades, Saint Clare of Assisi has been my spiritual friend, mother, and sister. She has taught me so much about courage, patience, and diligence in faith and discipleship. She has taught me so much about living the Gospel and sharing God’s love. She has taught me so much about how to live in prayer, silence, solitude, and service. In the end, Saint Clare’s teachings on the Christian life can be summed up in perhaps her clearest and simplest spiritual directive: “Love God. Serve God. It’s all in that.” May the powerful prayers of Saint Clare of Assisi bring us closer to Christ, closer to the Church, and closer to each other. May her prayers comfort us, empower us, and protect us. Saint Clare of Assisi, pray for us! Saint Clare of Assisi, pray for our suffering world!

Call to Prayer
For the Intercession of Saint Clare
By a Poor Clare
O Saint Clare,
ardent lover of Jesus
in the Most Blessed Sacrament,
help me to grow in love
for Christ Jesus, our Redeemer.
With your strong faith and unwavering hope,
gather our wounded Church,
our suffering world, and all people
into your loving heart
and lift us up to Jesus
with absolute confidence
in his merciful love.
O Saint Clare,
help us to be like you:
peaceful, kind, gentle,
patient, and persevering
in the face of all difficulties.
Trusting in your powerful intercession,
we confidently praise and thank God
for the blessings we have received.
Glory, praise, wisdom, and thanksgiving,
honor, power, and might to our God,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Glory to the Father,
to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Words of Wisdom from Saint Clare of Assisi
We become what we love
and who we love shapes what we become.
If we love things, we become a thing.
If we love nothing, we become nothing.
Imitation is not a literal mimicking of Christ,
rather it means becoming an image of the beloved,
an image revealed through transformation.
This means…that we are to become vessels
of God’s compassionate love for others.

Solemnity of the Assumption
August 14th-15th
Since the fifth century, God’s faithful people have believed in their hearts that upon her passing from this life, the Blessed Virgin Mary was raised body and soul into heaven. This ancient faith tradition, however, was not defined as a magisterial teaching of the Roman Catholic Church until 1950. In celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport will celebrate Holy Mass according to the following schedule:
- Wednesday, August 14th
Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 5:30pm - Thursday, August 15th
Saint Joachim Church at 8:00am
Saint Ann Church at 12:00pm
Saint Anthony Chapel at 6:00pm
For more information about the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, please contact Father Jim at frjim@ccgronline.com. Please join us! All are invited! All are welcome! Our Lady of the Assumption, pray for us and for our suffering world!

Our Lady of Good Voyage
Summer Carillon Concerts
Begins Friday, August 16th
A much-loved summer tradition is returning to Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish and the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport! Our Summer Carillon Concerts begin on Friday, August 16th at 6:30pm! This year, Luann Pallazola, Cynthia Cafasso, and Thomas Dort have prepared programs that include familiar classical and international music, popular hymns and songs, patriotic melodies, and selections especially for children!
Installed in 1922, the carillon bells at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church are the first tone set ever in the United States. The carillon’s thirty-one bronze bells hang from a steel beam within the bell-shaped west tower. Our bells range in weight from 16 pounds to 3,000 pounds.
The carillon bells at Our Lady of Good Voyage were forged by the Taylor Foundry in Loughboro, England. In order to avoid import taxes upon their arrival in Gloucester, the church was declared a bonded warehouse by the Collector of Customs in Boston, who happened to be a friend of the local congressman. Soon after, a bill declaring them “works of art” was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Warren G. Harding.
Although the bells can be heard from blocks away, the sound is always best near our church. Once again this year, Our Lady’s Guild will be selling cold drinks, snacks, and raffle tickets to support the parish. Our Summer Carillon Concerts are an awesome opportunity for the whole family to gather with friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners to enjoy the gift of music. Additional concerts are scheduled for Friday, August 16th at 6:30pm; Friday, August 23rd at 6:30pm; and Friday, August 30th at 6:30pm.
For more information about these special events, please contact Luann Pallazola at lpallazola@gmail.com. Save the dates! Spread the word! Bring your family! Bring a friend! Please join us! All are invited! All are welcome!
