25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Our Pastor’s Message
A School for the Lord’s Service

By Father Jim

For nearly fifteen centuries, the Rule of Saint Benedict has guided communities of religious men and women in the practice of living together and loving each other. Saint Benedict is often called the “founder of western monasticism.” But his intent was not to create a religious order or to construct a system of law and order. Rather, Saint Benedict’s goal was a “school for the Lord’s service” in which his followers would learn how to live as Christian disciples based on the core principles of prayer, rest, work, stability, humility, obedience, and an abiding commitment to the common good.

During my recent retreat with Sister Elizabeth Wagner of Transfiguration Hermitage, we spoke at length about how we are all complicit in allowing our culture to become an ugly contest between you and me, us and them. Our egos, demands, and desires are increasingly angry and uncompromising. All too often, we cross the line from self-interest to self-obsession, from individualism to atomism, as if our own personal concerns are somehow more important than the needs of our neighbors.

Needless to say, human nature has not changed much since Saint Benedict wrote his rule in the sixth century. He was determined to check and temper selfishness with the love, mercy, and generosity of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Here are just a few of the saint’s admonitions: “Show equal love to everyone. Accommodate and adapt yourself to each one’s character and intelligence;” and “No one is to pursue what he judges better for himself, but instead, what he judges better for someone else;” and “All who present themselves are to be received as Christ.”

In his book, A Good Life, Robert Benson writes: “Benedict calls us to a constant awareness that those who enter our world are all to be treated as though they were the Christ. He calls us to a posture, a way of seeing and of welcoming and of serving that is rooted in the sense of adoration of the Christ that is present in us all.” In this way, life is about living in community in the fullest sense. It is about respecting the dignity in every person. It is about believing in the divine essence that is present in all of God’s children. It is about loving, serving, and welcoming our neighbors — no matter who they may be.

The relevance of Saint Benedict’s teaching for our time is striking. And yet, none of his teachings are intended as social or political commentary. They are an effort to teach us lessons about how to love and serve the Lord here and now. They are intended to help us balance our individual interests with the good of the community. Benson writes: “The Rule calls us to order our lives and to maintain a sensibil- ity for others that keeps us aware of and reflects the presence of Christ among us always. Whether they live down the hall from us or are yet a stranger to us does not matter. The Christ among us is always to be honored, in things both great and small.” A good life, then, is a life during which what we want is balanced with what our neighbors need.

In the end, Saint Benedict encourages us to consider again and again how to live a life of love within the community of our friends, colleagues, loved ones, and the brothers and sisters who live next door. He creates a school of salvation and assigns us the challenging homework to live the Gospel and share God’s love. He takes us by the hand and leads us on the way of salvation. And he beckons us from across the centuries: “See how the Lord in his love shows us the way of life.”

Call to Prayer
An Ecumenical Christian Prayer

By Pope Francis
From Fratelli Tutti

O God, Trinity of Love,
from the profound communion
of your divine life,
pour out upon us
a torrent of fraternal love.

Grant us the love
reflected in the actions of Jesus,
in his family of Nazareth,
and in the early Christian community.

Grant that we Christians
may live the Gospel,
discovering Christ in every human being,
recognizing him crucified in the sufferings
of the abandoned and forgotten of our world,
and risen in each brother or sister
who makes a new start.

Come, Holy Spirit,
show us your beauty,
reflected in all the peoples of the earth,
so that we may discover anew
that all are important and all are necessary,
different faces of the one humanity
that God so loves. Amen.

Living the Gospel
Celebrating Saint Francis
October 2nd through October 5th

Cardinal Humberto Medeiros, Archbishop of Boston from 1970 until 1983, once wrote: “It is a long way from the cob- bled streets of thirteenth century Assisi to the paved sidewalks of today’s Boston. Times have changed indeed. Technology has transformed our culture. Yet even in an era of scientific wonders, history has by no means worn out the need for the simple values of the beloved Saint Francis of Assisi. In many ways, they are truly needed now more than ever.”

In this spirit, all friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners of the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport are invited to join Father Jim and Brother Patrick for Celebrating Saint Francis, a four-day commemoration of the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, from Wednesday, October 2nd through Saturday, October 5th. The Assisi Project
Our Lady, Queen of Virgins
Saturday, October 5th

For more than one hundred years, the stained glass windows in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church have inspired men and women of faith to reflect on the Blessed Virgin Mary under her various titles and patronages. Under her mantle, generations of good and hardworking people have found comfort, consolation, and the strength to carry on during challenging times.

Throughout this year, Father Jim, Brother Patrick, and the Assisi Project are focusing our prayers and reflections on the Blessed Mother as she is depicted in the windows of our beloved church. We do not focus so much on the art and architecture of the windows, but on the deep devotion and spirituality inspired by each image of Mary.

In this spirit, all are invited to join us for the Mother’s Heart: A Morning of Prayer with Our Lady, Queen of Virgins on Saturday, October 5th beginning with Mass at 8:00am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. After Mass, Brother Patrick will offer a brief reflection on the Blessed Mother’s love for those who offer their lives in chaste service to Christ and the People of God.

The Holy Gospels teach us that Mary is the first among all the sons and daughters of Eve to embrace the call to live a chaste and virginal life. We also know that Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi (among many other saints) regarded chastity in mind, body, and spirit as a key component of their humble labors in the Lord’s vineyard.

For more information about the Assisi Project and its good work in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport and-or if you would like us to pray for you or your special intention, please contact Brother Patrick at brpatrick@assisiproject.com. Save the date! Spread the word! Bring a friend! Please join us! All are welcome! Our Lady, Queen of Virgins, pray for us! May God bless you! May the Lord give you peace!
