Our Pastor’s Message
Born an Original
By Father Jim
Along with Baptism and Eucharist, Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation in the Roman Catholic Church. It completes the grace given at Baptism through the outpouring of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, Right Judgment, Understanding, Wisdom, and Wonder & Awe. These gifts seal or “confirm” the mystical union between the Candidates for Confirmation and Christ Jesus. These gifts also provide the guts and resolve necessary to live in prayer, fellowship, and service to God and our neighbors.
This year, 36 high school students from Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish have completed the requirements of our youth faith formation program. During the past year, these young men and women have prayed together and engaged in a serious way with the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. They are now well-prepared to publicly renew their baptismal vows, profess their faith, renounce the darkness, and live as faithful and faith-filled Catholics.
Living as a Christian disciple in today’s world is not easy. Indeed, deciding to live as a devoted fol- lower of Jesus Christ may be the most radical choice that these young disciples ever make. They are not alone. Discipleship has never been easy. For centuries, Christians have been mocked and martyred for their faith in Jesus. In recent years, however, the Church has raised up the memory of a young disciple whose entire life was devoted to living the Gospel and sharing God’s love with others.
Carlo Acutis (1991-2006) was born in London, but lived almost all of his short life in Italy. Carlo was an average student, but distinguished himself in two ways. First, like most young people of his generation, Carlo was passionate about technology. Second, Carlo was devoted to the Eucharist, the simple life, and small acts of charity. At age thirteen, Carlo wondered how the Church could do a better job of communicating the Good News of Christ. So, he began creating a website that combined his love for God and his growing curiosity about the internet. The result is a website that includes a catalog of Eucharistic miracles and apparitions of the Blessed Mother all around the world.
Just as Carlo was preparing to launch his website, he was diagnosed with an advanced form of leuke- mia. He died less than two weeks later, but his website and legacy live on. Almost immediately after Carlo’s death, people in need began praying for his intercession. Through his prayers, a woman claimed to have been cured of cancer. Another woman testified that his prayers helped her and her husband to conceive a child. In 2012, the Archbishop of Milan opened an official investigation into the life and holiness of Carlo Acutis. In 2013, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints declared him a Servant of God, the first step in the process formally making him a saint. And in 2018, Pope Francis approved his beatification as Blessed Carlo Acutis.
Before Blessed Carlo passed from this life, he said: “Everyone is born an original, but many people end up dying as photocopies.” Reflecting on these words, Pope Francis said to young people: “You can become what God your Creator knows you are, if only you realize that you are called to something greater. Ask for the help of the Holy Spirit and confidently aim for the great goal of holiness. In this way, you will not be a photocopy. You will be fully yourself.” Blessed Carlo Acutis is now venerated as a patron of both teenagers and the internet. May his prayers and good example inspire each one of us to be the person that we are called and created to be! Blessed Carlo Acutis, pray for us! Blessed Carlo Acutis, pray for our young disciples — now and always! Amen!

Call to Prayer
A Prayer for the Intercession of Blessed Carlo Acutis
Patron of Teenagers and the Internet
O God, our Father,
thank you for giving us Blessed Carlo,
a model of life for young people
and a messenger of love for all of us.
You made Carlo fall in love with your Son, Jesus,
making the Holy Eucharist his highway to heaven.
You gave him the Blessed Mother
and through the Holy Rosary,
you inspired him to sing the praises of her tenderness.
Accept Blessed Carlo’s prayers for us.
Help us to serve the poor
whom he always loved and helped.
Through Blessed Carlo’s intercession,
may we receive the graces we need,
and fulfill our joy by placing Blessed Carlo Acutis
among the saints of your Holy Church,
so that his smile may shine for us
and for the glory of your name for ever and ever. Amen.
Blessed Carlo Acutis, pray for us!
Words of Wisdom from Blessed Carlo Acutis
The Eucharist is my highway to heaven!
The more often that we receive the Eucharist,
the more we become like Jesus
and the more we get a foretaste of heaven.
Why do people care so much
about the beauty of their bodies,
but never worry about the beauty of their souls?
What will make us truly beautiful in the eyes of God
is the way in which we love him
and how we love our neighbors.
Life is a gift because as long as we are on this planet,
we can grow in our ability to love.
The more we learn to love,
the more we will enjoy eternal life with God.

Youth Faith Formation
Celebration of Confirmation
Saturday, January 27th
Welcome Father Brian McHugh!
Along with Baptism and Eucharist, Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation in the Roman Catholic Church. The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism through the outpouring of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, Right Judgment, Understanding, Wisdom, and Wonder & Awe. These gifts seal or confirm the mystical union between the candidates and Christ, and they prepare them to actively participate in the prayer, fellowship, and service of God’s family in their home parish and beyond.
This year, thirty-nine high school students from both Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish have successfully completed the requirements of our Confirmation Preparation Program. During the past two years, they prayed together, attended Mass together, and completed a rigorous program of formation as a community of young disciples. These students are now well-prepared to publicly renew their baptismal vows, profess their faith, and live as faithful and faith-filled Catholic Christians.
The Very Reverend Brian McHugh, Episcopal Vicar for the North Region of the Archdiocese of Boston, will join us as special guest celebrant and homilist for our annual celebrations of the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, January 27th at 4:00pm in Saint Ann Church and Sunday, February 11th at 11:45am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. Welcome back, Father Brian!
As we make ready for these celebrations, we pray for all of our candidates, sponsors, parents, catechists, and pastoral team members. In a special way, we thank Betsy Works, Associate Minister for Youth Faith Formation, for her dedication, hard work, and creative spirit. For more information about youth faith formation in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport, please contact Betsy at bworks@ccgronline.com. Come, Holy Spirit! Enkindle in us the fire of your love! Peace, blessings, and congratulations to all!

The Mother’s Heart
A Morning of Prayer with Our Lady of Lourdes
Saturday, February 3rd
For more than one hundred years, the stained glass windows in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church have inspired men and women of faith to reflect on the Blessed Virgin Mary under her various names and titles. Under her mantle, generations of good and hardworking people have found comfort, consolation, and the strength to carry on.
Throughout this year, Father Jim, Brother Patrick, and the Assisi Project will focus our prayer and reflection on the Blessed Mother as she is depicted in the windows of our beloved church. We will not focus so much on the art and architecture of the windows, but on the deep devotion and spirituality inspired by each depiction of Mary.
In this spirit and in anticipation of the 32nd Annual World Day of the Sick and the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, all friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners of the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport are invited to join us for “The Mother’s Heart: A Morning of Prayer & Reflection with Our Lady of Lourdes” on Saturday, February 3rd beginning with Holy Mass at 8:00am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church.
After Mass, Brother Patrick will offer an all new reflection on the Miracle of Lourdes; and then Father Jim will lead us in a period of faith sharing. Our morning of prayer and reflection will conclude with the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a special prayer by Pope Francis.
For more information about the Assisi Project and its good work in our parishes, please contact Brother Patrick at brpatrick@assisiproject.com. Save the date! Spread the word! Please join us! All are invited! All are welcome! May the Lord give you peace!

Youth Faith Formation
Preparing for Confirmation
Sunday, February 4th
For too many teenagers, the Sacrament of Confirmation has become a kind of graduation from the Catholic Church, rather than the joyful beginning of an adult life as a faithful disciple of Christ and active member of one’s home parish. We hope to stem this sad situation by transforming our youth faith formation program into an engaging process for the whole family.
Our parishes offer a two-year program of preparation for high school students who wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. During the first year of our program, your son or daughter will participate in the celebration of Sunday Mass and in workshops designed to prepare them to receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit; to help them grow in prayer, fellowship, and service; and to jumpstart their lives as faith-filled young adult disciples.
All high school students, beginning in the 9th grade, are welcome to enroll in our program. The first year of preparation begins with a Faith & Family Mass & Workshop on Sunday, February 4th at 11:00am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. This workshop is for new high school students and their parents or guardians. It includes registering for our program; an introduction to our program and schedule; and concludes with Mass at 11:45am.
If your child is now in high school and feels sincerely called to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, then please be sure to attend our Mass & Workshop on Sunday, February 4th in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. For more information about youth faith formation in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport, please contact Betsy Works at bworks@ccgronline.com. Please join us! Spread the word!
