This Week’s Message
An Embrace to Remember
By Brother Patrick
Vinicio Riva suffered from Neurofibromatosis 1, a rare genetic disease that causes both cancerous and noncancerous tumors to develop all over the body. The disease can also cause tumors in the brain, nerves, and spinal cord; and it can lead to blindness, deafness, heart problems, and severe pain. In Vinicio Riva’s case, the disease manifested itself most notably in hundreds of tumors on his face, hands, and torso that resulted in bleeding and disfigurement. Sometimes Vinicio would wake up in the morning with his pajamas soaked in the blood that seeped from his sores and tumors.
In addition to the physical challenges associated with his condition, Vinicio also faced rejection and isolation from his neighbors. His appearance prompted people to move instinctively away from him. Sometimes their reactions were compassionate, sometimes not. Vinicio once boarded a public bus in his hometown of Vicenza, which is located halfway between Verona and Padua in Northern Italy. When Vinicio approached a vacant seat, he was scolded harshly: “Go away!” Even though Neurofibromatosis is a non-infectious disease, too many people refused to interact with Vinicio and his family.
Vinicio Riva’s life changed forever in November 2013. Vinicio, along with his aunt and dozens of people from his home parish traveled to Vatican City, and they attended the weekly public audience with Pope Francis. In an interview afterwards with CNN, Vinicio said that he and his group never expected to come close to the Holy Father, but the Swiss Guard guided them toward the front row.
As Pope Francis made his way through the crowd, he saw Vinicio and walked directly toward him. Vinicio hoped that the pope might shake his hand, but instead the pope looked into his eyes and embraced him. Vinicio later told CNN: “We did not speak, but he looked at me as if he were digging deep inside, a beautiful look that I would never have expected…He did not have any fear of my illness. He embraced me. I quivered and felt a great warmth.”
After this memorable encounter with the Holy Father, Vinicio returned home and resumed his custodial work at a local nursing home. Despite Vinicio’s appearance, the sick and elderly patients enjoyed his company. They joked and chatted with him about their favorite local sport — soccer. Reflecting on his experience in Rome, Vinicio said: “I feel stronger and happier. I feel that I can move forward because the Lord is protecting me.” His family agreed that Vinicio’s life changed for the better because he was blessed and embraced by the pope.
Last Wednesday, Vinicio Riva passed away from complications related to his long battle with Neurofibromatosis. He was 58 years old. Just three days later, Pope Francis issued his annual message for the upcoming World Day of the Sick on February 11th. In this message, the Holy Father wrote: “Our lives, reflected in the image of the Holy Trinity, are meant to attain fulfillment through a network of relationships, friendships, and love, both given and received. We are created to be together, not alone.” With these words, the pope spoke from the heart about the longings of all people who live each day with illness or isolation. In short, we all need each other.
This week, we pray together for the soul of Vinicio Riva and for his grieving family. We pray all people who are sick and suffering, lonely, and left behind. And we pray for the grace, courage, and perseverance to do what Pope Francis teaches us to do by both his simple words and good example: Live the Gospel. Share God’s love. Love each other. And rebuild the Church — one soul at a time.

Call to Prayer
Prayers for Healing & Recovery
A Prayer to Jesus for Healing
Lord Jesus,
you invite all who are burdened to come to you.
Allow your healing hand to heal me.
Touch my soul with your compassion for others.
Touch my heart with your courage and love for all people.
Touch my mind with your wisdom,
and may my tongue always proclaim your praise.
Teach me to reach out to you in all my needs;
and help me to bring others to you by my example.
Most loving heart of Jesus,
bring me health in body and spirit,
so that I may serve you with all my strength.
Touch gently this life that you created,
now and forever. Amen.
A Prayer to the Holy Spirit for a Sick Friend
O Holy Spirit,
please come among us like a dove.
Shield and protect now the one that I love.
Cover their wounds
with your grace-feathered wings.
Shield them from sorrow,
breathe songs of hope within.
Tend with your goodness the pain that they bear.
Heal now their sickness with miracle care.
Carry them high,
so far above until they may see
your rainbow of promise,
the real hope that will be.
I love my friend so dearly,
please help me to be
all that you would give so graciously through me.
Glory be to the Father,
to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Youth Faith Formation
Celebration of Confirmation
Saturday, January 27th
Along with Baptism and Eucharist, Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation in the Roman Catholic Church. The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism through the outpouring of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, Right Judgment, Understanding, Wisdom, and Wonder & Awe. These gifts seal or confirm the mystical union between the candidates and Christ, and they prepare them to actively participate in the prayer, fellowship, and service of God’s family in their home parish and beyond.
This year, thirty-nine high school students from both Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish have successfully completed the requirements of our Confirmation Preparation Program. During the past two years, they prayed together, attended Mass together, and completed a rigorous program of formation as a community of young disciples. These students are now well-prepared to publicly renew their baptismal vows, profess their faith, and live as faithful and faith-filled Catholic Christians.
The Very Reverend Brian McHugh, Episcopal Vicar for the North Region of the Archdiocese of Boston, will join us as special guest celebrant and homilist for our annual celebrations of the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, January 27th at 4:00pm in Saint Ann Church and Sunday, February 11th at 11:45am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. Welcome back, Father Brian!
As we make ready for these celebrations, we pray for all of our candidates, sponsors, parents, catechists, and pastoral team members. In a special way, we thank Betsy Works, Associate Minister for Youth Faith Formation, for her dedication, hard work, and creative spirit. For more information about youth faith formation in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport, please contact Betsy at bworks@ccgronline.com. Come, Holy Spirit! Enkindle in us the fire of your love! Peace, blessings, and congratulations to all!

The Mother’s Heart
A Morning of Prayer with Our Lady of Lourdes
Saturday, February 3rd
For more than one hundred years, the stained glass windows in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church have inspired men and women of faith to reflect on the Blessed Virgin Mary under her various names and titles. Under her mantle, generations of good and hardworking people have found comfort, consolation, and the strength to carry on.
Throughout this year, Father Jim, Brother Patrick, and the Assisi Project will focus our prayer and reflection on the Blessed Mother as she is depicted in the windows of our beloved church. We will not focus so much on the art and architecture of the windows, but on the deep devotion and spirituality inspired by each depiction of Mary.
In this spirit and in anticipation of the 32nd Annual World Day of the Sick and the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, all friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners of the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport are invited to join us for “The Mother’s Heart: A Morning of Prayer & Reflection with Our Lady of Lourdes” on Saturday, February 3rd beginning with Holy Mass at 8:00am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church.
After Mass, Brother Patrick will offer an all new reflection on the Miracle of Lourdes; and then Father Jim will lead us in a period of faith sharing. Our morning of prayer and reflection will conclude with the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a special prayer by Pope Francis.
For more information about the Assisi Project and its good work in our parishes, please contact Brother Patrick at brpatrick@assisiproject.com. Save the date! Spread the word! Please join us! All are invited! All are welcome! May the Lord give you peace!

Youth Faith Formation
Preparing for Confirmation
Sunday, February 4th
For too many teenagers, the Sacrament of Confirmation has become a kind of graduation from the Catholic Church, rather than the joyful beginning of an adult life as a faithful disciple of Christ and active member of one’s home parish. We hope to stem this sad situation by transforming our youth faith formation program into an engaging process for the whole family.
Our parishes offer a two-year program of preparation for high school students who wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. During the first year of our program, your son or daughter will participate in the celebration of Sunday Mass and in workshops designed to prepare them to receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit; to help them grow in prayer, fellowship, and service; and to jumpstart their lives as faith-filled young adult disciples.
All high school students, beginning in the 9th grade, are welcome to enroll in our program. The first year of preparation begins with a Faith & Family Mass & Workshop on Sunday, February 4th at 11:00am in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. This workshop is for new high school students and their parents or guardians. It includes registering for our program; an introduction to our program and schedule; and concludes with Mass at 11:45am.
If your child is now in high school and feels sincerely called to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, then please be sure to attend our Mass & Workshop on Sunday, February 4th in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. For more information about youth faith formation in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport, please contact Betsy Works at bworks@ccgronline.com. Please join us! Spread the word! All are invited! All are welcome!
